ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF INSTITUTE OF SOFTWARE PRACTITIONERS OF NIGERIA
MR. SIMEON C. AGU AT THE OPENING CEREMONY
OF THE 8TH NIGERIA SOFTWARE EXHIBITION
All protocols observed.
FOREWORD
Let me first of all congratulate the
organizing committee for the painstaking
effort in putting up this current
version of the Nigerian Software Exhibition.
All the previous exhibitions had been
organized under the auspices of the
Computer Association of Nigeria (now
Nigerian Computer Society) dating
back to 1997. This is the first one
being held under the Institute of
Software Practitioners (ISPON) following
the reorganization of the computer
community into an umbrella body and
several interest groups.
The Software
industry in Nigeria is at last beginning
to draw high-level attention and
I believe that this week marks a
turning point in the journey towards
making our dear country a player
in the knowledge society. I will
draw attention to two events that
are highly significant.
First, His Excellency Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo has empowered a key player
in the private sector, to help us
out in a very special way. The details
are still to emerge.
Second, the Hon Minister of Science
and Technology, inaugurated a task
force to focus the government’s
efforts in leap forging software
development in Nigeria. We appreciate
these initiatives and hope that
by the time we assemble again for
the next year’s exhibition, we would
have started seeing the impact arising
from them.
What is quite
clear is that India did not arrive
at where it is today by chance.
The country for the past 20 years
took several very deliberate steps
to position itself for this revolution.
We are actually late but we can
still lay down some very well articulated
changes in the current situations
that will give us at least a fighting
chance to succeed.
